So when you have compiled a list of niches in a text file, the next thing to do is to determine their profitability and the competition involved. But note that the hot searches or products shown on some sites like shopping.com/top_searches are likely to be profitable, but you may want to confirm them.
Check if there is Demand for Information in your Niche
Some niche ideas you got in step 1 above might be or might not be popular. You probably do not want to see yourself in a niche where only a few people are interested in, that¡¯s why you have to check if there is demand for information in the niches you selected during niche hunting.
To check if there is demand for information in a niche, you have to check if people are really talking about your niche in community sites, or searching for information in your niche in search engines. Community sites are sites like forums, answer sites, blogs, social media sites and another web 2.0 sites where like-minded people come together to share ideas. If there are active community sites in a particular niche, then it means that people are really demanding and supplying information in the niche.
In the case of checking if people are searching for information in your niche through search engines, you can use keyword research tools. If there are thousands of searches for keywords in your niche, it means that a lot of people are searching for information in your niche. Keyword research tools can give you far more information than just the number of searches for keywords in your niche.

Check for the Level of Competition in your Niche
By competition, I mean the websites you will be competing within search engines and these websites are those ones that appear on the front page of Google when you search for the keywords you are targeting.
Your competitors are websites that appear on page 1 in Google or any search engine you’re targeting.
There is one very big misconception many people have when it comes to website competition. You must have come across this misconception I am about to talk about ¨C and you probably believed it!
Many times, I have come across many sites that will tell you that if you do a quoted search in Google for your target keyword, the number of results returned to indicate the strength of the competition. They went ahead to say that if you click through to the last page of the search engine result page, Google will display the actual number of sites that are competing for the keyword and if this number is more than a certain value, then the competition is too stiff. This is not really the truth because most of those pages might not even be targeting the Exact keyword you are targeting. On the other hand, even if the number of webpages is below a certain number, the competition might even be very stiff because some websites are well optimized for that keyword phrase.
I¡¯ll like to highlight the fact that your competitors are websites that are targeting the exact keyword you¡¯re targeting. Also, your competitors are those webpages that appear on the front page of Google when you do a search for your keywords.
Your main competitors are webpages that incorporate your keywords in places like their title, anchor text of backlinks and URL. So if you really want to smoke out your competitors in Google, you have to use the following search operators:
- All in anchor your keyword here
- All in title your the keyword here and
- All in URL your keyword here
Perform these three searches separately to filter out those webpages that have your target keyword in the anchor text of their backlinks, page title and in their URL respectively.
The three search queries mentioned above will only help you to see the sites you are competing with, they tell you nothing about how strong the competition is. To determine competition strength, you have to spy on your competitors.
Below are 4 things to look for when spying on your competitors (concentrate on the first page of Google SERP):

4. The Google page rank of your competitors’ backlinks.
The only type of backlinks you should consider are relevant ones. What I mean by relevant backlinks is that they are those backlinks that have your keywords in their anchor text. So don’t be scared at the total number of backlinks a site has. Also, disregard backlinks that have the Nofollow attribute.
A tough competing site is one that has a lot of RELEVANT BACKLINKS from high page rank pages. You are the one to decide what is tough for you. If you can do better than the competition by building relevant backlinks from webpages with high page rank, then your site will stand a chance of appearing on the first page of the Google search result page.
Warning: When building backlinks to a particular webpage, make sure that you vary the anchor text of the backlinks. If not search engines might penalize your site. In other words, don’t use the same anchor texts in all the backlinks that points to a webpage, vary it a little.
